Terms of Service
These terms govern your use of Lawyers Deck, the England and Wales case-law research service operated by Byte Cognetics Ltd.
Effective date: [DATE — to be set at launch]
1. Who we are
Lawyers Deck (“the Service”) is operated by Byte Cognetics Ltd (“we”, “us”), a company registered in England and Wales [company number and registered office — to be confirmed]. You can contact us at support@lawyersdeck.co.uk.
2. The Service
The Service lets you search published judgments of the courts of England and Wales, read case summaries and ask questions that are answered by an AI model using the text of those judgments. We offer a free Community plan and paid subscription plans (Starter, Pro, Max and Enterprise), each with usage allowances described on our pricing page and in your account.
3. Not legal advice
The Service is a research tool. Nothing produced by the Service, including AI answers, summaries, case briefs and storylines, is legal advice and no solicitor–client or other professional relationship is created by your use of it. AI-generated content can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. You must verify every proposition against the primary source before relying on it, and you remain solely responsible for any advice you give or decision you take.
4. Your account
- You must be at least 18 and provide accurate account details.
- You are responsible for activity under your account and for keeping your sign-in method secure.
- Accounts are personal. Seats on an Enterprise plan are allocated to named individuals by the organisation’s administrator.
- We may suspend or close accounts that breach these terms, abuse the Service or its usage allowances, or attempt to extract the corpus or the AI models at scale.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- scrape, crawl or bulk-download judgments, summaries or AI output other than through features we provide for that purpose;
- share credentials or circumvent plan limits;
- submit content that is unlawful, infringes third-party rights, or contains another person’s confidential information without authority;
- use AI output to generate material that misrepresents the law or the courts;
- interfere with the security or operation of the Service.
6. Subscriptions, payment and cancellation
- Paid plans are billed in advance, monthly (or annually where offered), in pounds sterling, through our payment provider Stripe. Prices are shown excluding VAT unless stated otherwise.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until cancelled.
- You may cancel at any time from the billing page. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period and you keep paid features until then.
- Plan upgrades take effect immediately and are prorated; downgrades take effect from the next billing period.
- If a payment fails we will retry it and notify you. After a short grace period (currently 7 days, 14 days for Enterprise) the account returns to the Community plan until payment succeeds.
- Your statutory cancellation rights, including the 14-day right to cancel, are set out in the Refunds & cancellation policy.
7. Content and licences
Judgments
Judgment text and metadata are reproduced from the Find Case Law service of The National Archives under the Open Justice Licence v1.0. Contains information licensed under the Open Justice Licence. The National Archives is not responsible for the Service and does not endorse it. Your re-use of judgment text is subject to that licence.
Our content
Summaries, case briefs, storylines, search indexes and the design of the Service are owned by us or our licensors. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use them within the Service for your own research during your subscription.
Your content
You own the questions, notes, case files and other material you submit. You grant us a licence to store and process it to provide the Service, including sending it to the AI providers listed in our Privacy Policy. We do not use your content to train AI models.
8. Availability and changes
We aim for high availability but the Service is provided “as is” and we do not guarantee that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or that the corpus is complete or current. We may change features, plan allowances and prices; material changes to paid plans will be notified at least 30 days before they take effect, and you may cancel before then.
9. Liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any liability that cannot be limited by law. Subject to that, we are not liable for any loss arising from reliance on AI output or on the accuracy or completeness of the corpus, for loss of profit, business or data, or for indirect or consequential loss. Our total liability in any 12-month period is limited to the fees you paid us in that period (or £100 if you paid none). If you are a consumer, nothing in this clause affects your statutory rights.
10. Termination
You can delete your account at any time from Settings; this cancels any subscription and removes your personal data as described in the Privacy Policy. We may terminate for breach on notice. Clauses that by their nature should survive termination do so.
11. General
- These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except that consumers may bring proceedings in their home jurisdiction where the law so provides.
- If any part of these terms is unenforceable the rest continues to apply.
- We may update these terms; the current version is always at this address and the effective date above will change.
